This piece was inspired by a song by the band called R.E.M. This song is about hope and holding on in the darkest moments, because you've just been reassured in the most beautiful way that the darkness isn't just yours to bear. We all get caught in it sometimes.
In this piece the dark, deep and moody blues speak to the vast, cold, dark and seemingly endless ocean of emotion -the overwhelming feeling of not being able to catch your breath, as if the water is rising to your throat. It's a visual echo of mental health struggles- those moments that feel isolating, consuming, and painfully lonely.
But when we shift our focus from the individual to the collective- from micro to macro, a transformation happens. Just knowing that we are not alone in our suffering can bring a profound sense of relief, connection and even healing.
Running through the centre of the painting are dense clusters of wax drips and splatters, forming a unified structure-a kind of glowing thread of light and strength. It symbolizes resilience, shared humanity, and the power we hold when we show up for one another. Let us be that light for each other. Let us reach out and extend our hands to those who are drowning.
